Julenissen of Norway
The Julenisse lives in Norway, a long, narrow country in northern Europe where winter lasts from October through April. Nearly a third of Norway lies above the Arctic Circle, so it’s fairly well assured that Norwegian children will have snow for Christmas! The celebrations begin on December 13th with the Saint Lucia ceremony, when the youngest daughter in each family dons a white robe and a crown of evergreens. She serves the family a breakfast of Lucia buns, lussekatter. The Norwegian Julenisse is dressed for a long walk among the glacial fjords throughout Norway. His short coat is embroidered with reindeer, a familiar sight in Norway. He bids you Merry Christmas, God Jul.
